“Ek Raah Aur Sahi Disha jo Zindagi Badal De”
Continuing from where we left off in Part 1, let us dive a little deeper into the teachings of Vastu Shastra and clear up some of the most persistent myths that continue to cause confusion. If you missed the first part, read our post on Common Vastu Shastra Myths Debunked Part 1 before continuing here.
Vastu is a precise science rooted in direction, energy, and balance. When people treat it as a collection of superstitions passed down by word of mouth, misunderstandings are bound to pile up. Here is what the actual teachings say.
The Truth: They share a goal but are not the same science.
Both Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui aim to create harmonious spaces by working with energy and direction, but they come from completely different traditions and use different methods to get there.
Vastu Shastra originated in ancient India and was primarily focused on the architecture of Hindu temples and their relationship with cosmic energy. Feng Shui, on the other hand, originated in China and was originally developed for the placement of graves in burial grounds before it evolved into a broader philosophy of space and energy.
In the modern world, both have moved well beyond their original contexts. They use different directional systems, different elemental frameworks, and different remedies. That said, many people find value in combining the two, which is why working with a Feng shui expert who also understands Vastu gives you a more complete approach than relying on just one.
The Truth: Basements do not bring bad luck on their own.
Many high-rise buildings and modern homes use basements for parking, storage, or utilities. Having an empty or partially used basement is not inherently negative in Vastu.
What matters is the condition of the space. A basement that is dirty, dark, cluttered, or poorly ventilated can hold stagnant energy, which affects the overall energy of the home above it. You can easily correct this by keeping the basement clean, using light colors on the walls, and making sure there is proper lighting throughout. A well-maintained basement has no reason to bring anything negative into your home.
The Truth: This is the opposite of what Vastu actually says.
According to Vastu, when a fish dies naturally in an aquarium, it is believed to have absorbed a problem or negative energy from the home or office on your behalf. It is considered a protective act, not a bad omen.
Aquariums are regarded as very positive additions to both homes and commercial spaces. The constant movement of water and fish keeps energy circulating, which is believed to attract wealth, peace, and positive opportunities. Placing an aquarium in the right direction of your office or home is one of the simpler Vastu tips that many people overlook. The Truth: The Peepal tree itself is not the problem.
Nature has its own energy, and trees are a part of that. Having a Peepal tree (sacred fig tree) in or near your home does not automatically bring harm.
The actual Vastu guidance around the Peepal tree is about balance. If you have a Peepal tree in your front yard, it is recommended to plant one in the backyard as well. This creates a symmetry of energy around the home, so the strong presence of the tree on one side does not create an imbalance in the directional energy of the space. The tree itself is sacred in Indian tradition. What matters is how it is positioned relative to your home.
The Truth: Direction matters in Vastu, but east is not a universal rule for business.
Sitting facing east while working does carry benefits in Vastu. East is the direction of the rising sun and is associated with clarity, new beginnings, and energy. However, the idea that facing east alone guarantees profit has no solid basis in Vastu teachings.
In practice, the best direction for a business person to face depends on multiple factors, including the nature of the business, the owner’s individual energy profile, and the overall Vastu layout of the space. What works for one setup may not work for another. This is exactly why a one-size-fits-all rule does not apply here. For a personalised assessment of your office or commercial space, a Vastu shastra for office consultation gives you direction and guidance that is specific to your exact situation.
One thread runs through all five of these myths: they all started as a misunderstanding or oversimplification of a real Vastu principle. The study of Vastu Shastra is layered, and many rules that circulate online have been taken out of context, applied incorrectly, or passed down in a distorted form over generations.
The safest way to apply Vastu to your home or business is to focus on the logical basis behind each principle rather than accepting or rejecting it at face value. And when in doubt, speak to someone who has studied it properly.
Vastu Shastra is a thoughtful and well-structured science. Most of the myths surrounding it arise from oversimplification, not from the teachings themselves. When you understand why a rule exists, you are in a much better position to apply it correctly or seek an appropriate remedy when it cannot be followed exactly.
